Former England footballer Andy Carroll is facing the possibility of imprisonment after being formally charged with breaching a non-molestation order.
The 36-year-old ex-Newcastle United and Liverpool striker is scheduled to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.
Specific details regarding the case remain undisclosed due to legal restrictions.
Carroll was arrested in April following an alleged incident that occurred in March. It has now been confirmed that he was the unnamed former Premier League player reported in July to have been detained at a UK airport in view of fellow travelers.
According to reports, Carroll was apprehended by Essex Police at Stansted Airport shortly after disembarking a flight from France.
A statement from Essex Police confirmed: "A man has been charged with breaching a non-molestation order. Andrew Carroll, 36, of Epping, was arrested on April 27 and the alleged offences relate to an incident in March. He is due to appear at Chelmsford magistrates’ court on December 30."
A non-molestation order is a civil injunction typically designed to prohibit an individual from approaching or contacting another person or entering specific locations. Breaching such an order can result in criminal prosecution, with a maximum prison sentence of five years.
A source described the scene at the time of the arrest: "It appeared that an alert was raised with Border Force officers during passport control, which prompted police involvement. He was questioned and subsequently taken into custody, causing noticeable disruption among passengers in the area."
Carroll, whose estimated wealth is reported to be around £25 million, recently returned to English football, joining National League South club Dagenham & Redbridge after a spell with French side Bordeaux. During his peak career period, he commanded a weekly salary of £80,000 following a £35 million transfer from Newcastle to Liverpool in 2011.
The striker, who also represented West Ham United, Reading, and West Bromwich Albion while earning nine international caps for England, married television personality Billi Mucklow in 2022. The couple announced their separation two years later. They share three children, and Carroll has two additional children from a previous relationship.
Since 2024, Carroll has been in a relationship with hairstylist Lou Teasdale.
