Vincent Kompany downplays Man City links as Bayern boss tipped to replace Guardiola
Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany has played down talk that he could take over from Pep Guardiola at Man City one day.
There doesn’t appear to be any signs that Guardiola, 54, has plans to quit Man City in the near future having signed a new contract this time last year.
Still, Man City will have to replace him at some point, and Kompany, 39, is regarded as the favourite to take over once the time comes.
Speaking at the recent ‘Power Days’ business event, Bayern chief Uli Hoeness revealed that Guardiola played a key role in them hiring the Belgian.
"Kompany learned a lot from Pep Guardiola,” he said. “When (sporting director) Max Eberl suggested Kompany as the third or fourth option, Karl-Heinz (Rummenigge) and I called Pep Guardiola, with whom we are both very good friends, and asked him.0
“Pep said, ‘You can take him blindly, he’s a fantastic coach, he’ll even take over Man City someday when I’m no longer there.'"
Kompany has now addressed the rumours, shutting down the notion that he’s thinking about anything other than Bayern.
"I've often said, I'm not here to comment on Uli Hoeness' statements,” he responded.0
“I have huge respect for him. But in football I can't think that far ahead, my focus is on Bayern and what we can achieve now. I like to just live in the world I have in front of me now, that takes up all my time. I have zero thoughts about other teams, I only see FC Bayern."
