‘We Have to Stick Together’ – Van Dijk Reflects on Liverpool’s Late Defeat

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has spoken out following the team’s late defeat to rivals Man United at Anfield on Sunday (October 19).

The 34-year-old was arguably responsible for Bryan Mbeumo’s opener after he rushed out to close down the United attacker, clattering into Alexis Mac Allister in the process.

Fellow Dutchman Cody Gakpo bagged the equaliser in the 78th minute later, only for Harry Maguire to restore United’s lead five minutes later.

Liverpool have now suffered four consecutive defeats across all competitions and have fallen four points behind league leaders Arsenal.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, captain Van Dijk tried to explain what is going wrong for the Premier League holders.

"I think we conceded a very sloppy second goal,” he said.

”We worked so hard to get back into the game and we created great opportunities to score the winner but if you concede a second goal like that, that is the disappointing part.

"If you look at the game as a whole, we were far too rushed. I think they were very patient they didn't press us high but they didn't let us on the ball. We still created many opportunities to score but the reality is that we lost."

On what is next he added: "It is an interesting time because we have to stick together, not just us as players but as a club and the fans who want us to win."
