Ronaldo overtakes Messi and Mbappe in Flashscore's list of most followed players

Flashscore recently introduced a new feature allowing you to follow some of your favourite players, and users have been making use of it.

Just like your favourite teams, you can 'star' players in the mobile app to receive notifications and keep tabs on their performances.

With the feature kicking into gear, we have delved into the data from September to see who the most popular players are to follow.0

The ever mercurial Cristiano Ronaldo was the most followed player in the UK in September, with plenty still holding a vested interest in the 40-year-old's career.

Ronaldo's fiercest competitor, Lionel Messi, trailed him in second place in another continuation of the long-standing rivalry between the pair.

Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe completes the podium in third, narrowly ahead of Barcelona talent and Ballon d'Or runner-up0Lamine Yamal.

The top four held a gap to Alexander Isak, with the Liverpool striker taking up fifth spot with under half the following of the leader, Ronaldo.

The Swedish striker led a bunched field consisting of Manchester City's0Erling Haaland, Barcelona pair0Marcus Rashford and Pedri, and0Bayern Munich's0Harry Kane.

Vinicius Junior rounded out the top 10, curiously with 43 per cent of the following his Real Madrid teammate Mbappe had.

As can already be seen, players from Barcelona and Real Madrid attracted the most interest among users.

Players from either of the Spanish top-flight giants accounted for half of the names in the top 10, and that trend continued further down the list.

Raphinha (13th), Jude Bellingham (14th), Arda Guler (15th), Rodrygo (16th) and Robert Lewandowski (17th) meant La Liga players took up half of the names in the top 20.

Other stars in the top 20 included Cole Palmer (11th), Mohamed Salah (12th), while the rear was brought up by Joao Pedro, Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele, and Florian Wirtz.

Ronaldo was also the most followed player globally and in Portugal, Italy and Germany, but he wasn't favoured in all.

In France, Mbappe unsurprisingly led the way ahead of Ronaldo and Lamine Yamal, with the exact same order in Spain.

Some countries displayed more interest in 'local' players, with Poland favouring Lewandowski and0Neymar ranking first in Brazil.
