Zinedine Zidane is once again being linked with the Manchester United job as speculation intensifies over who will step in as Ruben Amorim's replacement.

Current United head coach Amorim's miserable stint in charge is showing no signs of improvement, with his team suffering their third Premier League loss of the season against Brentford last weekend. Their poor run of form, coupled with an early exit from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Grimsby Town, could see the Portuguese boss face the axe, less than a year into his tenure.

Legendary former French footballer and manager Zidane has emerged as a possible contender for the job, having been linked with the role for several years. The 53-year-old has been out of management since leaving Real Madrid for the second time in 2021.

The ex-Ballon d'Or winner's impressive first stint at the Santiago Bernabeu between 2016 and 2018, which saw him lift nine trophies, including three consecutive Champions League titles, makes him a desirable candidate for many affiliated with the Red Devils.

However, Zidane has previously played down such rumours, citing his limited English-speaking skills as a barrier to taking on the role. Many also speculate that he's biding his time for Didier Deschamps to step down from his position as France's national team manager.

And some reports suggest that Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola, Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner and Gareth Southgate are higher up on Ineos' list of potential replacements if they decide to part ways with Amorim.

Yet, football is full of surprises, as we now turn our attention to Zidane's personal life, specifically his marriage to model Veronique Fernandez, who could potentially join him in Manchester should he secure the job.

Veronique has been married to Zidane for over 30 years

The suave Frenchman first met Veronique back in 1989 when they were both teenagers. Born in Rodez, France, to Spanish parents, Veronique initially studied biology at university but later dropped out.

She then enrolled at the Rosella Hightower School in Cannes with dreams of becoming a professional dancer. It was here that she crossed paths with Zidane, who was playing for AS Cannes at the time.

Despite living in strict gender-segregated accommodation and being too shy to approach her during their numerous encounters, the future football icon eventually mustered the courage to initiate a conversation with a simple, 'Hello'. Their relationship quickly blossomed from there, leading them to move into a small studio flat together shortly afterwards.

Five years on, in 1994, the pair exchanged vows in a luxurious ceremony at Bordeaux town hall. Fernandez shelved her aspirations of becoming a professional dancer to support her footballer husband's career.

Fast forward to 2013 and the retired Zidane accompanied his wife on a visit to her parents in Rodez, a small town in southern France. There, he encountered the owners of the local football club - Ligue 2 club Rodez Aveyron FC - who explained that the team was struggling financially. The Zidanes pledged to support the club, both financially and with occasional appearances at matches.

“I come from the streets, a difficult neighbourhood,” Zidane said. “I have never forgotten my roots. It’s not because you work for the biggest club in the world that you forget everything beforehand. It’s thanks to my in-laws that I have discovered this club and family. I love this region and spending time here and I feel at home."

Zinedine and Veronique have four sons together: Theo, Luca, Elyaz and Enzo. The eldest is Enzo, 30, who played as a midfielder for Spain at youth level and Real Madrid’s reserves before retiring in 2024.

Luca, 27, made two appearances as a goalkeeper for Los Blancos when his dad was in charge before playing for the likes of Eibar and Granada.

He most recently switched his allegiance from France to Algeria, where his dad’s side of the family originates. Elyaz, 19, plays for Real Betis’ B-team as a centre-back, and 23-year-old Theo is a midfielder for second division side Cordoba.

In June last year, Zidane and his wife celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary by hosting a ceremony with their friends and family present, where they renewed their vows.
