Barcelona Sporting Director Deco Explains Why Frenkie de Jong Has Yet to Sign Contract Extension

Barcelona sporting director Deco has provided insight into why midfielder Frenkie de Jong has not yet signed a contract extension.

De Jong has managed to establish himself as a key player under Hansi Flick, seemingly putting an end to years of speculation surrounding his future.

The 28-year-old has been expected to put pen to paper on a new deal for the past few months, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season.

According to a report from Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, talks are back on track between the player and club.

Speaking with the same publication, Deco revealed that there is a belief that an agreement will be reached in the not-so-distant future.

“We are talking. Frenkie is really enjoying being here. He has matured on all levels, with his family, in the team,” he said.

“If you are a player with character, you don’t just want to stay because you are in Barcelona, but because you want to compete for titles, and he sees that he can compete for titles. He sees this and wants to stay here.

“At the club, we see him as a key player for the current project and the coming years, so I think we’ll get him to continue.”

When pressed on whether he believes De Jong will ink fresh terms, Deco added: “Yes, I do.”
