Harry Kane has addressed speculation he may return to the Premier League next season amid links with former club Tottenham. The England captain is said to have a release clause worth just under £57 million that kicks in next summer, provided he expresses a desire to leave before the end of January 2026. But following a brace for Bayern Munich, the striker has set the record straight on his future.

Tottenham keen on Kane reunion

The England captain swapped Tottenham for Bayern in 2023, and since then, he has scored a remarkable 100 goals in just 104 games - a club and top five European leagues record. Speculation has mounted that he could return to the north London team in 2026, something current Spurs boss Thomas Frank has openly welcomed.

Earlier this week, the former Brentford boss said: "I think there's a lot of Tottenham fans, including myself, who would like to see Kane back. He's a top player. Personally, I don't think he will do it right now, if I'm honest, he'll probably stay in Bayern and continue performing well. He was top scorer last year and won the championship, he's doing fantastic now. I don't know what he's thinking. Myself, I'm a traveller, I like to travel, I like to explore things as well. He's been here for many years so why not enjoy the time at Bayern a little bit more. But he's welcome. If he wants to join us, he's more than welcome."

Bayern Munich not confident on keeping Kane

Soon after Frank's comments, Bayern sporting director Max Eberl did not strike a particularly confident figure when asked if the German giants would be able to keep their star striker. That is despite him having two years left on his contract.

"He's old enough to make his own decisions. Whether there is a clause or no clause, it's down to him. If he says, 'I want to make a decision', then he'll make it, as he showed at Tottenham," he said. "But our wish is, of course, to be very, very successful with Harry this season and in the future."

Kane, who has also been linked with Barcelona and Manchester United, was asked about his future following Bayern's 4-0 win over Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga on Friday night. And going by his comments, there is nowhere else he'd rather be.

Asked whether he was thinking about returning to England, he told reporters after the victory, "No, not at the moment. I'm really happy here. I have two years left on my contract. I'm enjoying every moment. [Returning to England] is not in my thought process. I'm enjoying it with the team, with the coach, and hopefully we continue to be successful."

When pressed on if Bayern is the best place for him to win trophies, he replied, "Yes, absolutely."

Lothar Matthaus 2025

Kane's comments echoed by Bayern legend

Amid all this talk of a Bayern exit and release clauses, Bavarian legend Lothar Matthaus insists the striker is "in very good hands" in Munich.

He told RTL/ntv and Sport.de this week, "Exit clause or not. It's not a mandatory clause. He can stay at Bayern. Kane is in very good hands in Munich. He feels very comfortable there. He has been Germany's top scorer twice and is on the verge of his third top scorer award. He's winning titles with Bayern, something he didn't do with Tottenham. I don't think he can feel more comfortable anywhere else than at FC Bayern."

Kane focusing on delivering for Bayern Munich

Kane's comments may dispel the rumours that he wants to return to England after the 2026 World Cup. Former Tottenham striker Teddy Sheringham believes Spurs would be the most "obvious choice" if he went back to the Premier League, with Alan Shearer's goal record still potentially on Kane's radar. But for the time being, he will be focusing on Bayern's matches against Pafos in the Champions League on Tuesday and then next Saturday in the Bundesliga away at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Incidentally, according to manager Vincent Kompany, Kane is getting even better at the age of 32.

"Harry Kane has always been a goalscorer, but I think he has opened up his game even more! The way he drops back, gets between the lines. In the end, that allows him to escape the attention of defenders," the Belgian coach said.
