However, Smith was forced to watch the match from the stands as he served a one-match ban for accumulating three yellow cards.

But he did not let that dampen his mood as he embraced the party atmosphere in the posh seats.

Before every game, Charlotte supporters do the Poznan.

The move - made famous by Polish side Lech Poznan - sees fans turn around with their backs to the pitch and jump up and down with their arms around each other.

Manchester City have adopted it for many years and now it is customary for Charlotte supporters.

So when his fans led the way before kick-off, Smith could not resist the chance to join in - then got technical director Tommy Wilson and owner David Tepper involved.

The trio were shown on the giant screens inside the Bank of America Stadium.

His jubilant reaction sparked brilliant responses on social media.

One said: "Absolutely incredible."

Another wrote: "This is amazing."

A third added: "F***ing love that bloke."

And a final user commented: "Deano limbs."

Smith's mood got even better once the match got underway.

The ex-Aston Villa, Norwich and Leicester boss saw Idan Toklomati fire Charlotte in front on 34 minutes.

He added his second just after the break.

Tomas Aviles was sent off for Inter Miami on 79 minutes - and five minutes later, Toklomati completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot to secure a 3-0 win.

It could have been very different for Smith, though.

Messi fluffed his lines from a penalty at 0-0, with the Charlotte goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina easily saving his Panenka attempt.

The result leaves Charlotte third in the MLS Eastern Conference on 53 points from 30 games.

For Inter Miami, they are down in eighth on 46 points - but do have four games in hand following their Club World Cup exploits.
