Bayern Munich 'braced' for possibility of Harry Kane leaving 'in a year or two' amid talk of Premier League return

Bayern Munich are reportedly prepared for the possibility that Harry Kane may depart within a couple of years, with a Premier League return possible.

WHAT HAPPENED?

 Bundesliga expert Raphael Honigstein has told talkSPORT that Bayern are "braced" for the possibility that Kane may not see out his career, or even his current contract until 2027, in Bavaria. A return to the Premier League is a possibility, though it is viewed as more of a long-term idea than an immediate worry for the German champions.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

As explained by Honigstein, Bayern went in for several strikers this summer such as Benjamin Sesko and Nick Woltemade, eventually signing Nicolas Jackson on a loan with an obligation to buy. While Jackson looks forward to the prospect of playing alongside Kane, the idea likely exists that the Senegalese may, one day, succeed the England captain.

WHAT HONIGSTEIN SAID

Honigstein said: "People in Germany don't expect Harry Kane to see out his career at Bayern necessarily. There was always a chance, I think Bayern are braced for the, shall we say, possibility that he will leave perhaps slightly earlier than his contract. It runs until 2027, so one way or the other, both he and the club need to take a view on this fairly soon.

"The fact that they were pushing for somebody who can be both a back-up and an understudy for Kane - they looked at Sesko, they looked at Woltemade, they ended up with Jackson, with an obligation, kind of a soft obligation, to buy - suggests that Bayern are aware of the possibility that Kane might go in a year or two, and they need to plan for the future slightly. But he is so good that anyone who comes in, and I would put Jackson in that bracket, would have to play around Kane rather than really compete.

WHAT NEXT FOR KANE AND BAYERN?

Kane is very much focused on life at Bayern for the moment, with multiple aims this season such as retaining the Bundesliga title and challenging to win the Champions League for the first time in his career. Kane will then aim to captain England at the 2026 World Cup as Thomas Tuchel's side hope to go all the way. His future and the possibility of a Premier League return will likely only become clear following the conclusion of the season and then the summer tournament. A huge potential move to Manchester United has been touted as an option.
