Arsenal have confirmed 23-year-old goalkeeper Karl Hein has joined Werder Bremen on a season-long loan for the 2025-26 campaign. The Estonia international, who spent last season as Real Valladolid’s first-choice stopper in La Liga, will now head to Germany as he looks to compete for minutes behind new No.1 Mio Backhaus at the Weserstadion.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Hein joined Arsenal from Estonian side Nomme United in 2018 and has since gained experience with loan spells at Reading and Real Valladolid. He made his senior debut for the Gunners in a Carabao Cup tie against Brighton in 2022 but has not featured in the Premier League. Arsenal confirmed his loan to Werder Bremen for the rest of the season.

WHAT HEIN SAID
Speaking to Werder Bremen club media, Hein said: "The decision to move to Werder was very easy for me. It being such a big club with fantastic fans and a great stadium, I didn’t have to think twice. I’m really looking forward to getting started in Bremen."
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Hein’s move comes amid uncertainty in Bremen’s goalkeeping ranks, with young starter Mio Backhaus yet to make a Bundesliga appearance. The 23-year-old could step in if Backhaus struggles to adapt, having already racked up 32 La Liga appearances last season with Real Valladolid. For Arsenal, the loan offers valuable development for Hein while maintaining depth in the position for the future.

WHAT NEXT FOR HEIN?
The 23-year-old will initially serve as an understudy to Backhaus but could get a chance to impress in the Bundesliga this season. Bremen’s goalkeeping coach has hinted that competition will remain open, giving Hein a potential pathway to regular minutes. Arsenal will closely monitor his progress as they weigh long-term options between the sticks.
