Details of Newcastle's attempts to agree a new contract with Alexander Isak have come to light as Liverpool prepare an offer for the Swedish striker.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Newcastle are preparing themselves for a hefty bid from Liverpool for star striker Isak, according to The Times. The Magpies have been keen to agree a new contract with the Sweden international and wanted to make him their highest-paid player ever, but so far no extension has been agreed to his deal which still has three years left to run.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
It's reported Isak's agent met with Newcastle manager Eddie Howe at the club's training ground earlier this month, with the Carabao Cup holders keen to agree new terms. However, they have since started targeting Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, with an €80 million (£69.3 million) offer rejected by the Bundesliga club, while Liverpool are now mulling over their own £130 million approach for Isak.
DID YOU KNOW?
It is now thought there has been communication between Liverpool and Newcastle regarding interest from Arne Slot's side, though the Magpies remain insistent no official bid has been received as of yet. Newcastle are keen to keep Isak, who scored 27 goals in all competitions last season.

WHAT NEXT?
Should Liverpool advance in negotiations and eventually sign Isak, it would break the fee they forked out to Bayer Leverkusen for midfielder Florian Wirtz earlier this summer. That cost the club £116 million (€13.6 million) but a move for Isak would certainly eclipse that.
