Ange Postecoglou targeted for shock move after Tottenham exit and held 'informal discussions' with Premier League club

Brentford explored the possibility of appointing Ange Postecoglou after Thomas Frank joined Tottenham, in what would have been a remarkable job swap.

  • Frank appointed Spurs boss this summe
  • Postecoglou sacked after 17th-placed finish
  • Brentford approached Europa League winner

WHAT HAPPENED?

Per The Athletic, Brentford considered a stunning move to appoint Postecoglou after his Spurs exit. Tottenham sacked the Australian after a dire 17th-placed Premier League finish, although he gained an immense amount of credit among the fanbase, and potentially suitors, when he ended the club's 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League in Bilbao.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Brentford's director of football, Phil Giles, is reported to have held informal discussions with Postecoglou over a potential move to west London but the 59-year-old was not interviewed for the role, and the Bees instead appointed Keith Andrews, who previously worked as the club's set-piece coach.

DID YOU KNOW?

Postecolgou may have overseen glory in Bilbao but he endured a torrid Premier League season with the north London club as Spurs finished 17th, 13 points clear of relegation. They lost 22 of their 38 games, and ended the campaign 18 points behind Brentford.

WHAT NEXT?

Brentford continue their preparations for the Premier League season. They play QPR in a friendly on August 2nd.
