Arsenal have officially announced the appointment of Gabriel Heinze as a member of Mikel Arteta’s backroom staff, following a notable coaching shuffle at the North London club. The 47-year-old Argentine takes on the role left vacant by Carlos Cuesta, who recently accepted a head coach position with Serie A side Parma.

WHAT HAPPENED?

After concluding a decorated playing career in 2014, Heinze wasted no time transitioning into management. He began his coaching career in Argentina’s top flight, taking the reins at clubs including Godoy Cruz, Argentinos Juniors, and Velez Sarsfield. In 2021, he briefly ventured into Major League Soccer with Atlanta United, though his time there lasted just six months.

His most recent role was as head coach of Newell’s Old Boys, the same club where he began his playing journey. His year-long stint at the Argentine outfit further deepened his managerial experience and tactical philosophy, which he now brings to the Premier League.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

During his days on the pitch, Heinze enjoyed immense success across Europe. He lifted league titles with Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Marseille, while also winning an Olympic gold medal with Argentina at the 2004 Athens Games. He went on to make 72 appearances for his national side, playing in World Cups and reaching the Copa America final twice.

TELL ME MORE

Apart from Cuseta, Mehmet Ali, previously in charge of Arsenal’s Under-21 squad, has departed to join Brentford, where he becomes part of Keith Andrews' coaching staff. Heinze joins an established group of staff, including assistant coach Albert Stuivenberg, set-piece specialist Nico Jover, and goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana. All three have been integral parts of Arteta’s setup since 2021, helping the Gunners consistently challenge for top honours.

DID YOU KNOW?

Heinze’s addition to the coaching setup is a reunion of sorts, as he and Arteta shared the pitch during their time at Paris Saint-Germain in the 2001–2002 season.

WHAT NEXT FOR ARSENAL?

Although he will serve as an assistant, Heinze is expected to take a hands-on approach in working with Arsenal’s defenders. His insight as a former top-level left-back and centre-back could be instrumental in nurturing young talents like Myles Lewis-Skelly. He can make his Premier League dugout debut against his former side, United, at Old Trafford on August 17.
