Lionel Messi to LEAVE Inter Miami?! Argentina icon 'considers' MLS exit ahead of 2026 World Cup as he eyes a more competitive league

Lionel Messi could consider leaving Inter Miami to play in a more competitive league ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America. Messi and Co. faced humiliation in the Club World Cup round of 16 stage after suffering a 4-0 loss to Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain. The Argentine's current deal expires at the end of 2025 and he has reportedly put fresh contract talks on hold.

WHAT HAPPENED?

According to journalist Esteban Edul, the Albiceleste captain might not agree to extend his contract at Inter Miami beyond 2025. His existing deal, which he signed while joining the club in 2023, expires at the end of this year. While the said deal includes an option for a 12-month extension, it has yet to be triggered.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Edul adds that Messi is now considering playing in a more competitive league in the final six months before Argentina begin their World Cup title defence in North America. Negotiations with the Herons have been put on hold for now.

WHAT INTER MIAMI SAID

Sources close to Inter Miami have told journalist Fabrizio Romano: "Leo is under contract until the end of 2025. The reality is that both parties are interested in continuing the relationship. The necessary steps are being taken with the right mindset to make it happen.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Journalist Guillem Balague had earlier told BBC Sport that the Messi family is happy in America, which is an indication that he could extend his stay by one more year. Balague said: "Will he commit his future to Inter Miami? After an unhappy two-year stay in Paris, on a personal level, the Messi family are in a good place in Miami. If his family are happy, then so is Messi. His wife Antonella is a face of Tiffany in the US as well as working with other brands such as Adidas. His three sons are all playing in the youth teams and Messi goes to watch every game they play."

WHAT NEXT FOR INTER MIAMI?

After elimination from the Club World Cup, Javier Mascherano's side will be back in action in the MLS this Sunday as they take on CF Montreal.
