Wales v Finland: UEFA EURO 2024 Play-Offs Semi-final

Liverpool have appointed former Wales manager Rob Page as the club's new under-21 team's head coach. Page was sacked by the Football Association of Wales in June last year after Wales failed to qualify for Euro 2024 and then played out a draw against minnows Gibraltar. The 50-year-old has now replaced Reds' long-serving youth coach Barry Lewtas, who left the club this summer after four years.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool confirmed Page's appointment as Lewtas' replacement on Wednesday. Lewtas's four-year-long stint as Liverpool U-21 head coach ended this month after his contract expired.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Page was appointed as Wales manager on an interim basis in November 2020 when Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs was arrested on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend. He guided Wales to the last-16 stage of Euro 2020 and then helped the nation reach the World Cup in 2022 for the first time since 1958. His deal was made permanent in September 2022. Unfortunately, Wales failed to qualify for the European Championship last year and after playing out a draw against Gibraltar, the 50-year-old was shown the door.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

On Page's appointment, Liverpool academy director Alex Inglethorpe said: "Rob brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to a key role as young players look to bridge that gap from Academy prospect to first-team footballer. His recent achievements in guiding Wales to the last 16 at Euro 2020 before qualifying for the 2022 World Cup speak for themselves but perhaps less heralded is the work that took place during his time in charge of the national team, which saw numerous pathway players make it into the senior squad.

"This is something we have seen first-hand at Liverpool with several of our Academy players making significant progress on the international stage under Rob’s guidance. This level of experience in transitioning young footballers towards the professional game and on to the highest levels of domestic and international football will be a significant resource for all at the Academy, especially the players. Myself and all the staff are greatly looking forward to working with Rob as we endeavour to continue producing players capable of playing at the highest level and in the most demanding of arenas."

WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?

The Liverpool senior side are currently enjoying a well-earned break after winning the English league title for a record-equalling 20th time. They will regroup next month and will play their first friendly match against Preston on July 13.
