The 2026 World Cup could be the first major tournament for Giménez, who assured fans "someday" Mexico will win
WHAT HAPPENED?
Santiago Giménez has high hopes for the future of the Mexican men's national team - and he isn’t afraid to dream big. The AC Milan striker boldly stated in a recent interview with Vamos Show that he’s convinced Mexico will one day win the World Cup, even if it doesn't happen during his own playing career.
“Yeah, I believe Mexico will be World Cup Champions,” said Giménez. “I’m going to give everything I have, and the team will too. But even if it’s not with me or this current squad, I’m 100 percent sure we’ll see Mexico win it someday.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE
That belief comes despite the odds and historical precedent. In 13 World Cup appearances, El Tri has never advanced beyond the quarterfinals, with their best finishes coming in 1970 and 1986 - both on home soil - when they placed sixth overall after reaching the second round.
Giménez, affectionately known as "El Bebote," has yet to experience a World Cup himself. He was left out of the final roster for Qatar 2022, but all signs point to his likely debut in the 2026 tournament, set to be held across North America.
His growing influence at Milan and sharp goal-scoring instincts have made him a key figure for Mexico’s future.
WHAT SANTIAGO GIMENEZ SAID
Giménez also expressed a desire to see fellow Mexican defender Johan Vásquez join him at Milan. Vásquez, who plays for Genoa, recently earned recognition as their top performer of the season.
“Johan would be a great signing,” said Giménez. “He’s a strong, professional center-back with a winning mentality. He knows the league well, he’s been consistent, doesn’t get injured, and has what it takes to succeed at Milan.”

WHAT NEXT FOR MEXICO NATIONAL TEAM?
Mexico will kick off their Gold Cup campaign Saturday against the Dominican Republic at SoFi Stadium. It will be a historic occasion, as this marks the first meeting between the two national teams in official competition.
