Sarina Wiegman has named the England squad she will take to Euro 2025 this summer, and Lauren James has made the cut. The Chelsea forward was an injury doubt for the tournament, having not played since suffering a hamstring problem on her last outing for the Lionesses in April, but she will still be on the plane to Switzerland.

England's preparation for the all-European showdown will ramp up at the end of this month, when they face Jamaica at the King Power Stadium in their final warm-up friendly. By that point, Wiegman should have a good idea of the starting line-up she plans to wheel out for group-stage matches against France, the Netherlands and Wales in July.

In any case, it will not feature Mary Earps, Fran Kirby or Millie Bright, who each started every single game at Euro 2022.

Earps shocked her team-mates by suddenly retiring from international football last week. Kirby announced she was stepping down from the international stage after being informed that she would not be picked for the tournament, calling the decision 'a dagger to my heart but also a weight off my shoulders'. And Bright made herself unavailable for selection due to feeling burnt out.

Among the other high-profile absentees are Ella Morris, who suffered a serious knee injury last month, Missy Bo Kearns and Nikita Parris.

Parris, 31, has missed out partly due to the emergence of exciting Arsenal teenager Michelle Agyemang. Ex-England striker Natasha Dowie admits she can see Wiegman's vision by trading experience for youth in that particular selection call.

"I thought Nikita Parris may go in ahead of Michelle Agyemang but to be honest, when you look at that front line, you've got a lot of experience there in major tournaments," Downie told BBC News. "Maybe Sarina Wiegman is thinking a wildcard is more exciting, more effective.

"We've seen what Agyemang can do within seconds of a game on her debut, so I think that's quite exciting to have her as a bit of an unknown. Agyemang has no fear, she has nothing to lose."
