Matheus Cunha could effectively be Marcus Rashford’s replacement at Manchester United, with the Red Devils reportedly ready to pay the £62.5million release clause in his Wolves contract. And Rashford, likely to leave after his public falling-out with Ruben Amorim earlier in the season, may be able to hand the Brazilian the perfect welcome present at Old Trafford.

Rashford is set to leave this summer after an impressive loan spell at Aston Villa, though Unai Emery’s outfit may not be the England international’s next destination. It is thought that Rashford’s preference is to play Champions League football with Barcelona.

Should he depart United, with an asking price of around £40m mooted, he leaves behind an ideal gift to start Cunha’s time at the club. Rashford has worn the number 10 jersey since 2018, but will vacate the iconic shirt.

It is the same number that Cunha wears at Wolves as their talisman and previously at Hertha Berlin, taking the digits previously donned by Wayne Rooney, Sir Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and George Best would certainly provide encouragement.

After winning Wolves’ player of the season award, Cunha posted an emotional message on social media. He wrote: “Thanks for this award player of the season. No words to say how happy I was this season with all of you.

“Thank you, my colleagues, for being a family in the difficult times and in the wonderful times we spent together. This season will have a different place in my heart. Grateful to God for everything.”

Those comments came prior to what is likely to be Cunha’s final game for Wolves, a 1-1 draw at home to Brentford, with United set to trigger his release clause as soon as the transfer window opens.

The deal was not contingent on securing Champions League football via the Europa League and Cunha is reportedly willing to join even though Amorim’s side cannot offer him European football next season.

He is likely to operate on the left flank in Amorim’s 3-4-3, similar to how he has been positioned at Wolves this season, with Alejandro Garnacho told by the head coach to find a new club.
