Wycombe’s automatic promotion hopes dented after thrashing by Charlton

Wycombe’s top-two hopes suffered a huge dent as they were thrashed 4-0 at home by fellow League One promotion chasers Charlton.

The Chairboys began the day in second, one point clear of Wrexham, but are now third with two games remaining.

Charlton kept alive their own chances of joining Birmingham in the top two with them four points adrift of the Welsh side.

They bossed Wycombe from start to finish and took an 11th-minute lead through Lloyd Jones’ well-taken effort past goalkeeper Will Norris.

It was 2-0 after 24 minutes thanks to a brilliant strike from Luke Berry, who fired home from 15 yards.

Wycombe rarely offered anything definitive as Richard Kone was starved of service and around the hour mark the game was wrapped up.

Norris slipped when receiving a back pass from Xavier Simons and Matt Godden tapped in Charlton’s third in the 58th minute.

Four minutes later, Karoy Anderson scored a header to send the travelling fans into ecstasy.

Charlton finished the game with 10 men after Chuks Aneke was given a straight red in stoppage time following a heated exchange with Luke Leahy.
