Tranmere boost survival prospects with thumping victory over Chesterfield

Tranmere returned to winning ways with a convincing 4-0 victory over Chesterfield at Prenton Park to give their League Two survival hopes a massive boost.

Four second-half strikes saw Rovers record their third home win on the bounce and end Chesterfield’s six-game unbeaten run.

The visitors almost broke the deadlock after 15 minutes but Liam Mandeville saw his close-range effort blocked by the feet of goalkeeper Luke McGee.

Ten minutes later, the Spireites broke through the Tranmere defence once more with Ollie Banks’ initial effort saved by McGee before Michael Olakigbe sent the rebound wide.

But it was the hosts who took the lead just after the break when the Chesterfield defence failed to clear the danger and Cameron Norman rifled the ball into an empty net.

Rovers doubled their lead after 54 minutes as Kristian Dennis teed up Regan Hendry to side-foot the ball home from 10 yards.

Substitute Josh Davison made it three five minutes from time with his first touch after coming off the bench before Sam Finley added a fourth in the closing stages.
