Sonny Carey scores winner as Blackpool come from behind against Cambridge

Blackpool came from behind to beat relegation-threatened Cambridge 2-1 in League One.

Now beaten only once in 15 games since Boxing Day, Steve Bruce’s side trailed to Dom Ballard’s third-minute opener.

A scorer for the Tangerines against United last August, the on-loan Southampton teenager’s shot was adjudged to have crossed the line after a comic attempted clearance by Matthew Pennington.

Ashley Fletcher equalised 14 minutes later, turning in Odeluga Offiah’s cross from close range for his ninth goal of the season.

What would have been a record-breaking 12th home draw this season loomed for the Seasiders.

Instead, Blackpool boosted their outside play-off chances in the second half.

Sonny Carey had already seen one raking effort saved by Nathan Bishop before unleashing another effort from distance after 54 minutes. This time Carey’s effort squeezed under Bishop’s dive.

Impressive Josh Stokes forced a fine late save from Harry Tyrer as Cambridge crashed to a third successive defeat.
