Ex-Premier League star Aleksandar Mitrovic has been rushed to hospital with a heart issue.

Mitrovic, 30, who played on these shores for Fulham and Newcastle - shining for the Cottagers in the Championship and top flight - moved to Saudi Arabia in 2023 when he joined Al Hilal in a big-money transfer.

He has continued his goalscoring in the Middle East, netting 40 in his first season. But according to reports in the Middle East, the Serbian striker has been taken to hospital due to "rapid heartbeat caused by physical stress".

The forward is said to have been ordered to undergo "complete rest" after being taken to hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning. Mitrovic had played in Al Hilal's 2-0 win over Al Feiha on Friday - less than 48 hours before the incident.

It was his first game in two months, after being sidelined due to a hamstring issue. "It has been a tough two and half months for me, had some problems with my hamstring, injury... after injury," Mitrovic told SSC Sports after the game.

"I worked really hard to come back... I can help my team-mates... happy with the goal."

Mitrovic, who plundered 38 goals in the Premier League, was just one of a number of stars that traded Europe for the Kingdom that summer as footballers followed in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo - who made the move after the 2022 World Cup.

Al Hilal are currently second in the Saudi Pro League - four points behind league leaders Al Ittihad. Far from being the only foreign star in the sqaud - Al Hilal also boast Joao Cancelo, Kalidou Koulibaly, Rúben Neves and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

It was also Neymar's home until the winter transfer window, when the Brazilian moved back home to boyhood club Santos in an emotional transfer.
