Liverpool icon Mohamed Salah is known as "the Egyptian King"
Manchester City have completed the signing of Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt in a £65m deal - with their announcement on social media amusing fans of rivals Liverpool. Egyptian striker Marmoush has agreed a contract that will keep him at the Etihad until 2029. The move will take City's spending to almost £150m in the last week as they look to arrest the decline that currently sees them fifth in the Premier League table. The news is a timely boost for Pep Guardiola, in the wake of his side's humiliating 4-2 defeat at Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League last night. Marmoush, 25, has scored 20 goals in 26 appearances in all competitions this season.
But when it comes to his standing in Egypt, the Premier League and indeed world football, his new club had to concede he still falls behind Liverpool's goal machine and his countryman Mohamed Salah.
City's official X account posted photos of Marmoush signing his contract with the caption "City's Egyptian Prince" and emojis of the Egyptian flag and a crown - making the concession that Salah holds the nickname of the "Egyptian King".
Liverpool fans predictably responded in their droves, posting photos of their legendary winger, with one supporter of the league leaders saying: "Called him prince because there's already a king? Well played." Another said: "There is one Egyptian king in England."
A third supporter commented: "Thank you for knowing your place. There's only one king." And another posted: "Thank you for respecting Salah and knowing he is the only Egyptian King." While a fifth replied: "Thank you for your reasonable acknowledgement of Egyptian royal hierarchy."
Commenting on his arrival, Marmoush said: "This is a day I will never forget. To sign for Manchester City – one of the best teams in the world – is an amazing feeling. I am delighted, my family are so proud, and we are all very happy to be here in Manchester.
"With Pep, his technical staff and the world-class facilities here, players have everything they need to become better. That was really enticing for me when I had the chance to come here. "And I cannot deny I also want to win trophies. City have been the most successful club in England for many, many years, so I know I am joining a winning environment and winning culture. "I want to learn from the staff and my team-mates, and I want to become a valued member of this winning team. I really am looking forward to getting going, meeting the other players and showing the Manchester City fans what I can do."
