WHAT HAPPENED?
The 23-year-old Dutch striker was signed for £36.5 million ($44m) as the first signing under INEOS's partial ownership. While expectations were high, Zirkzee has struggled to find his footing, managing just four goals and two assists in 28 appearances across all competitions.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Amid his struggles, Zirkzee has attracted interest from Juventus, where his former Bologna manager Thiago Motta is eager to reunite with him. The Italian giants were reportedly keen to bring him in as a replacement for Dusan Vlahovic, who they planned to offload during the January transfer window. Speculation intensified with reports of advanced talks between Zirkzee’s representatives and Juventus officials.
DID YOU KNOW?
Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany has clarified that while Juventus expressed interest, there was no formal agreement or commitment from Zirkzee to make the switch. In fact, he has decided to stay at United and fight for his place in Ruben Amorim's squad. Moreover, Zirkzee has informed club officials of his intention to remain at Old Trafford, firmly dismissing the possibility of a January departure.
WHAT NEXT FOR ZIRKZEE?
While Zirkzee’s decision to stay signals his commitment to the club, the road ahead remains challenging. With competition for playing time and mounting pressure to perform, the Dutchman must quickly adapt to English football with a test against Arsenal next in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday.
