Gianluigi Donnarumma was inches away 'from losing his eye' after a horror challenge during PSG's Ligue 1 clash with Monaco.

Donnarumma, 25, was between the sticks for the French giants' fixture at Stade Louis II, but Luis Enrique's side lost their keeper early in the first half after the sickening clash.

Monaco's Wilfried Singo had broken free down the right wing, and under pressure from Joao Neves, he looked to dink the ball over Donnarumma. However, after his shot was blocked, Singo, 23, tried to hurdle the Italian - who had come rushing off his line.

The Ivorian's studs connected with Donnarumma's face, leaving blood pouring out the resulting wound. Enrique had no option but to take the Italian off, who walked off unaided, for back-up shot stopper Matvei Safonov.

Singo was already in the book for a challenge on Desire Doue, but he escaped any punishment for the coming together.

"Donnarumma is 2cm away from losing his eye," one fan posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. While a second fumed: "Singo is already on a yellow card and this leap, while it was a collision, was incredibly reckless play and it could have taken Donnarumma's eye off to be honest. Singo is on thin ice right now!"

"Oooff just seen Donnarumma injury. Ouch," a third posted. And another added: "Donnarumma needs to see a plastic surgeon ASAP for that horrific injury bless him!"

While a fifth shared: "That must have been a scary moment for Donnarumma! Hoping for a quick recovery, he's a tough goalkeeper, but no one deserves that kind of injury!"

The Italian shared the full extent of his injuries on social media, with a French journalist showing the wound required ten staples to close.
