Derek Adams was a happy man after League Two strugglers Morecambe avoided an FA Cup upset by beating non-league Worthing 2-0.
The Shrimps scored early through Jordan Slew but they did not secure safe passage into the second round until Rhys Williams struck in the 88th minute.
Morecambe boss Adams was impressed with the National League South outfit, who created a number of chances when 1-0 down.
He said: “It was job done. We got off to the perfect start.
“Worthing came into it and they have nothing to lose. That’s the beauty of the FA Cup.
“You saw the shocks that happened today and will happen. They went at us and we dealt with it.
“We’re through to the next round, but Worthing were excellent.
“It’s not easy in the cup. It’s not easy coming to an astroturf pitch or to come away to a non-league side with an atmosphere as it was.
“We know people are looking at fixtures where there could be a shock, but we’re not one of the teams that has been shocked. There are many teams in the FA Cup today who have been shocked.
“The most important thing was to get through to the next round. We’ve made £50,000 here, that’s £95,000 in the cup competitions so far and that can only help us.”
Worthing were bidding to make the second round for only the second time in their history but saw those dreams dashed.
Manager Chris Agutter boss said: “We created enough chances to win a couple of games to be honest.
“It’s frustrating to go out of the FA Cup based on two set-pieces. But there’s a feeling of pride as well because we played very well.
“We can’t let pride get in the way of the fact that I think we should have won the game and didn’t.
“We felt we could get the better of Morecambe, we thought they were beatable.
“We’re disappointed not to win the game. But we’ve justified the support. They want to see attacking play and that’s what we give them.
“I was just disappointed we couldn’t give them a goal or win the game.”
