Arsenal have reportedly been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Newcastle star Alexander Isak.
The Gunners were expected to pursue a striker during the summer transfer window before ultimately ruling that, despite the sale of Eddie Nketiah to Crystal Palace, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus were sufficient options up top.
Alexander Isak has been heavily linked with Arsenal previously
Arsenal explored several options before reaching that conclusion though, with RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko and Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres both admired. Isak was also considered by the north London outfit following his mesmerising 21-goal campaign, though Newcastle managed to retain the services of their Sweden international.
However, Mikel Arteta’s side may be offered hope if they opt to reignite their interest in Isak next summer.
According to the Daily Mail, despite reports, the former Real Sociedad is not in talks with Newcastle over a new contract at St James’ Park. Initial talks were held with Isak’s entourage over a fresh deal but those talks have ‘since ceased’.
The forward and Newcastle both feel that thrashing out a fresh contract is ‘not needed’ at this time, with the current deal in place expiring in 2028.
Isak was reportedly ‘reluctant’ to put pen to paper on a fresh deal as he is keen to play Champions League football next season and therefore wants to see how the current campaign pans out before committing his future to Eddie Howe’s side.
The forward also has ‘emerging doubts’ over the speed in which the Newcastle project is unravelling, with staff even conceding that the club must match the ambitions of players if they are to keep them happy on Tyneside.
In what will be music to the ears of Arsenal, there is the expectation that Isak will push to leave the Magpies in 2025 if his side fails to return to the top four and quality for the Champions League. The word coming out of Newcastle will put the Gunners on red alert as they look ahead at the upcoming few transfer windows and plot how they can bolster their ranks to close the gap on Manchester City.
Havertz has bagged four goals in eight league games so far this season, though the importance of depth cannot be understated for the Emirates Stadium outfit as they battle it out for Premier League glory.
