Matt Bloomfield hails Wycombe for ‘making baby steps’ after Peterborough win

Wycombe manager Matt Bloomfield feels his side are “making baby steps” and “still evolving” following their 3-1 home win over Peterborough.

The Chairboys fell behind in the 50th minute thanks to a Ricky-Jade Jones tap-in, but after Richard Kone was brought on as a second-half substitute on the hour mark, he bagged himself a nine-minute hat-trick.

His first two strikes came within four minutes of entering the pitch, before he scored a penalty five minutes later.

Amid the resulting spot-kick, Posh captain Emmanuel Fernandez was shown a second yellow card for a deliberate handball.

The result means Wanderers are now unbeaten in eight Sky Bet League One games and have continued to score in every divisional outing this season.

When told that Wycombe had scored 20 goals in 10 games this season, Bloomfield said: “I didn’t know that.

“I try not to look at that as I focus on each game in isolation, especially after the first two games (which Wanderers lost 3-2 to both Wrexham and Birmingham).

“We’re making baby steps in terms of the team that we want to become as we’re still evolving, so credit to them for the work they put in.

“We didn’t have a game last Saturday, but you wouldn’t think it based on the work effort they put in training.

“They were brilliant on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the group that went to QPR were intense with their work.

“They have done everything they have asked us to do.

“Peterborough are a top team in our division and we had three very good games against them last season, so I knew that it was going to be a good game today.

“We knew that we needed to be on top and we’re pleased with the outcome.”

While Bloomfield was complimentary about his team, his opposite number Darren Ferguson was anything but.

Peterborough, at the time of writing, have conceded the most goals in the league this season with 24, and are yet to keep a clean sheet.

They have also conceded three goals in four of their last six league matches.

Ferguson said: “This is not good enough and we need to be honest here.

“We’re failing miserably at the moment in terms of one part of the pitch in particular, but it is my responsibility to improve.

“It’s not plain sailing as a manager, but you need to find that desire and find a way to continue putting in that extra work.

“Sometimes is about the desire in keeping the ball out of the net and the first goal we conceded is appalling.

“We need to be honest here – we are way off.

“If you keep conceding three goals a game, you’re going to be in trouble.”
