Matt Bloomfield happy as Wycombe see off Northampton

Wycombe boss Matt Bloomfield felt his side deserved the slice of luck which earned them all three points against Northampton on Saturday.
Dan Udoh cancelled out Sam Hoskins’ penalty in the first half at Sixfields before the decisive moment arrived just after half-time when Northampton goalkeeper Lee Burge fumbled a cross and Richard Kone tapped in the loose ball for a 2-1 victory.
“It’s a really satisfying win,” said Bloomfield. “We were busy during the international break because we felt there was a lot of work to do in terms of how we’re trying to play.
“A lot of the things we worked on came out today and I thought we were excellent, especially in the first half, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching us.
“The goal we gave away was obviously disappointing but it was really important to bounce back so quickly and the boys played with courage and character.
“The first goal we scored was a brilliant team effort and we got a little bit of luck for the second one but I think we deserved it on the balance of play and the amount of chances that we created.
“We had enough chances to put the game to bed and it did get a little bit messy towards the end but we defended well.
“We knew it would be a tough game but apart from the loose play for their penalty I thought we were excellent and deserved to take three points.”
Northampton manager Jon Brady found it a tough pill to swallow.
And he admitted his side had been guilty of not turning their possession into chances.
He said: “Frustrating, that’s the word which sums it up today It’s a mistake that has ultimately gifted them the goal to win the game.
“The cross should be cleared but there’s a lack of communication between Jon (Guthrie) and Burgey. One has left it for the other and it bounces off their player and they tap it in.
“Those boys have been excellent throughout our time here and they’ve saved us on many occasions but in that moment it’s a lack of communication and we go 2-1 down and we’re chasing the game.
“Wycombe pinned us back with the way they played in the first half and it caused us some problems so we changed shape and I felt we had the momentum before half-time.
“We got in on three or four occasions and we could have scored with better decision-making. The goalkeeper is well off his line and Callum (Morton) could have chipped him and then he’s gone around the goalkeeper and Tyler (Roberts) is in a great position in the box but we don’t make the right decisions.
“It’s frustrating because we looked good in those moments and then the subs really added energy to us but we couldn’t create that one big chance.”
