The ex-Fulham, West Ham United and Leicester City player now works as assistant manager for the Ghana national team. The 43-year-old was on his way back from Accra - the capital city of the African nation - after watching a match with Ghana boss Otto Addo and another staff member on Saturday.

Reports in Ghana state their vehicle was involved in a collision with a pick up truck on the way back to southwestern town Tarkwa. All three members of the national side's coaching team were taken to hospital for emergency treatment.

Footage and photos from the incident show a damaged SUV with one side completely caved in and wheels missing and out of place. Investigations are ongoing in Accra as the Ghana side prepare for upcoming international matches against Angola and Niger.

In a statement, the Ghana FA said: "Members of the Black Stars technical team were involved in a road accident while returning from Tarkwa. The vehicle carrying head coach Otto Addo, assistant coach John Paintsil and goalkeepers trainer Fatawu Dauda avoided a head-on collision with a pickup truck which veered off into its lane, with some damage to the vehicle.

"All three members of the technical team are in stable condition. They will undergo further medical assessments upon their return to Accra."

A full-back and defensive midfielder by trade, Paintsil was capped 89 times by his country over a 12-year period; he played in both the Olympics and World Cup, reaching the quarter-final in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

He was signed by West Ham under Alan Pardew after the 2006 World Cup. Hammers fans will recall his distinctive matchday appearance; wearing one long sleeve and cutting the other to make it shorter.

But he only played 19 times in the top flight for West Ham before making the move across London to Fulham. There he became a first-team regular, helping the Cottagers to a record seventh-place finish in the 2008-09 season.

After leaving Fulham in 2011, he signed for Leicester City under then manager Sven-Göran Eriksson, but only made a handful of appearances. When his playing days finished he ventured into coaching, securing his first job as an assistant manager at South African side Kaiser Chiefs.
