Matt Taylor: Bristol Rovers could have a serious player in Promise Omochere

Bristol Rovers manager Matt Taylor feels he could have a “serious player” on his hands after summer signing Promise Omochere made the difference in a 2-0 win against Cambridge.

Omochere netted both goals, two right-footed finishes from inside the box, to get off the mark for his new club in his fifth appearance in all competitions.

“He’s a handful like he’s been but he added the goals,” Taylor said.

“The first one is always a big one for a new, big signing, a centre forward.

“Sometimes it takes forever to come. There was a bit of a deflection but his work-rate adheres him to the fans, and then if he gets goals on top then we’ve a serious player.

“And you could see that just settled his game and other players’ games down in terms of the team…That partnership of Ruel (Sotiriou) and Promise looks an exciting one.”

Taylor had no complaints with his side’s work.

He added: “We deserved to win the game. It might have been more comfortable when we went 2-0 up as we had a few moments which should really materialise into a better goal return.

“At 2-0, it’s a risky scoreline because one moment against you and you’re holding on and it changes the whole feel of it. From start to finish I was pleased with our day’s work.”

Cambridge boss Garry Monk rued the defensive lapses that were the difference between the two sides.

“We’re trying to improve week on week but I think the overall feeling from us is for all the good play that we’re having it’s the goals that we’re conceding,” he said.

“They are poor goals to concede. If you look across the games since the start of the season we’ve conceded pretty much across the board poor goals, which are really avoidable.

“We just said in there (the dressing room), if we can get them out of our game we’ll be in a great position to take points.

“Even in the game today, it wasn’t like Vinny (Vicente Reyes, Cambridge’s goalkeeper) was getting peppered and they were cutting us open.

“We had some good spells with the ball but those really avoidable goals are what are letting us down at this time. We managed to come back from that last week but today we couldn’t.”
