Lee Bell pleased with Crewe attitude after late win at Bromley

Lee Bell hailed his Crewe players as they produced a fantastic late show to come from behind and seal their first three points of the season with a 2-1 win at Bromley.

Lewis Leigh’s second-minute strike appeared to give Bromley a great platform to build from but two Crewe goals in the final seven minutes from Micky Demetriou and Chris Long ensured it was the Railwaymen who took the spoils on the day.

“The early goal for Bromley set the game up for them but they didn’t really have too much quality coming out at us and we were getting up the pitch with relative ease,” Bell said.

“That said I was frustrated at half time as we needed that little bit more belief to keep moving the ball forward and go round the outside of them.

“Our response in the second half was brilliant, the players produced the little moments of quality that we needed. Micky stood up and got himself in the right position and Chris Long did what we got him in to do which is score goals and win us football matches.”

Leigh exchanged passes with Michael Cheek in the second minute, the former running on to the ball to fire into the roof of the net beyond Filip Marschall.

With time running out and Lee Bell having made five attacking substitutions, the pressure told in the latter stages of the game.

Demetriou ghosted past a static Bromley defence to volley in Joel Tabinor’s inswinging corner seven minutes from time before Long won it in the first minute of time added on.

Jack Lankester’s superb delivery picked out Long to head past Grant Smith with the Bromley defence stationary once again.

Bromley manager Andy Woodman did not hide his disappointment at full time.

He said: “It was an unacceptable performance, the goals we conceded came from a failure to do basic defending.

“We were poor today, we performed as if the game was won after the early goal and struggled to string two passes together.

“There were too many turnovers and that’s what allowed Crewe to keep coming at us and eventually score.”
