Huddersfield’s 100 per cent start to the Sky Bet League One campaign came to an end as they were reduced to 10 men and beaten 2-1 at Rotherham.
A breathless five-minute spell towards the end of the game brought two goals and a red card for Danny Ward, before Mallik Wilks grabbed an added time winner for the hosts.
Rotherham almost made the perfect start when Sam Nombe barged past Nigel Lonwijk before being denied by goalkeeper Lee Nicholls.
Town had Nicholls to thank again as he clawed out Jonson Clarke-Harris’ effort from Wilks’ clever flicked header.
Huddersfield should have gone in front before the break when a hooked ball from Callum Marshall was headed over by Tom Lees.
Ward was given a straight red card with 18 minutes remaining for leading with an elbow on Jamie McCart.
The visitors took the lead just two minutes later when Josh Koroma coolly set up substitute Joe Hodge to slide in.
Rotherham then won a 77th-minute penalty when Wilks was adjudged to have been brought down by Lasse Sorensen. Clarke-Harris slammed the spot-kick home to level the scores.
Huddersfield coach Andy Quy was given a red card for apparently playing a part in time-wasting by referee Sebastian Stockbridge.
Wilks got the winner in the first minute of added time after cutting in from the right and lashing low past Nicholls.
A bad day for the visitors was compounded after the final whistle when head coach Michael Duff was also shown a red card by Stockbridge.
