Matt Bloomfield hails Wycombe’s ‘brilliant’ resilience after beating Rotherham

Wycombe manager Matt Bloomfield was pleased with his side’s resilience after they beat Rotherham 2-0 to earn their first League One win of the season.

Debutant Cameron Humphreys and Kieran Sadlier struck at Adams Park, ending a run of back-to-back 3-2 defeats to Wrexham and Birmingham respectively.

Bloomfield said: “I’m really pleased with the performance as we dominated possession and territory and I’m very happy with how we attacked the game.

“We knew we had to make it a football game with the ball in play as much as possible, and I’m pleased with the way the boys went with their task.

“I think that the resilience the boys showed was brilliant, as you have to stand up and be counted when you play against Rotherham.

“We knew we were going to have a tough game as Steve (Evans) has recruited really well as they have got players who have played at a good level but we stuck to our task and I’m pleased with how we played.”

Bloomfield was full of praise for Humphreys, who scored on his Wanderers debut as a second-half substitute following his loan move from Ipswich.

He said: “I’m so happy for Cameron. It’s the fourth time I’ve tried to sign Cameron.

“The first was at Colchester and that was never going to happen, last summer, then in January and now he is here.

“He’s a very good player Cam as he’s highly thought of at Ipswich, and thank you to Kieran (McKenna) for allowing him to come here.”

Rotherham boss Steve Evans said his side need to make their own luck as they have now gone three league games without a goal.

The result also means the Millers have now not won on the road in the league since November 8, 2022.

Evans said: “We had good opportunities in the final third so from that point of view it’s very disappointing.

“I thought there were spells today that we played as well as we could against Wycombe for long spells.

“It’s the quietest I have heard the supporters here until they scored, and that’s because of our dominance.

“We dominated for long, long spells but you have to make your own luck.”
