Reading boss Ruben Selles can not wait for ‘suffering’ of last season to be over

Reading manager Ruben Selles admitted he could not wait for the “suffering” of last season to be over after they earned a 2-0 League One win over Wigan, with the arrival of prospective new owner Rob Couhig now imminent.

The 75-year-old American financier and members of his consortium watched on as Reading eased to their first victory of the league campaign, with goals from Charlie Savage and Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan.

Couhig – the former owner of Wycombe – is likely to complete his purchase of the Berkshire club early next week from Chinese businessman Dai Yongge.

“We spoke about this with the boys,” Selles said. “We suffered a lot last season and especially at the beginning of the season.

“There were a lot of things (financial troubles) against us.

“But our target now is to prove how we can all (with Couhig) do it together.

“That is every day, that is every game, that is every minute.

“Rob and his group are coming in, they will have seen what we can do and they will be very happy with us.”

On the win, Selles added: “I thought that the boys played a really good game and were dominant from the very beginning.

“We showed that we wanted to win the game. We scored the first goal and had many chances to score the second.

“In the second half, when it went to 2-0, we managed the game very well.

“Wigan are a good team. We expected them to be able to potentially put us under pressure but the boys dealt with it brilliantly.

“All we need now is to be consistent. I’m very proud of them today and the way that they have been working.”

Wigan have lost both of their league games so far this season.

“At times, it was far too easy for Reading to get through us,” Wigan manager Shaun Maloney said. “But that was my fault.

“There’s a way of getting beaten like we did against Charlton (1-0), which was a performance that I loved.

“Sometimes there’s the odd mistake, sometimes the odd ball will just drop in the box that’s the way it goes sometimes.

“But their second goal, I didn’t like that at all. Reading picked the ball up in midfield and, basically, went 30 yards with it.

“We made a big error and that was it. We lost the game.

“I think that the connection between the midfield and Joe (Hugill) up front was OK. That was not an issue.

“But I think that we have to be a little bit braver when we attacked.

“At half-time I said that I just wanted to see us better with the ball. It was also important for us to show the right mentality.”
