Chelsea have opened talks with Lille about the possibility of bringing Canadian striker Jonathan David to Stamford Bridge
- Chelsea want David
- Blues chasing striker to answer No. 9 problems
- David's Canada lost to Argentina
WHAT HAPPENED?
Chelsea have identified David as their main target to finally be the answer to their years of striker problems, according to The Athletic. The Canadian striker has long been linked with a switch to the Premier League and Chelsea appear as if they are going to finally seal that move. With just the one year left on his contract at the French club, Lille will be eager to cash-in on the striker.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Since Todd Boehly took over the club, Chelsea's search for the perfect striker has not been entirely successful. Christopher Nkunku was sidelined for much of last season and Nicolas Jackson, although he had his moments, failed to perform consistently in front of goal and new boss Enzo Maresca is clearly in the market for a frontman.
DID YOU KNOW?
Jonathan David scored 71 goals in 161 Ligue Un games for Lille and even helped them win the title in his debut season at the club. His goalscoring record is also good at international level having scored 26 goals in 49 caps for Canada.
WHAT NEXT FOR DAVID?
For the time being, David will just be focused on performing for his country at the Copa America. David led the line as Canada lost the opening game of the tournament 2-0 to Argentina and they will be hoping to bounce back with a stronger performance against Chile and Peru.
