Italy legend Leonardo Bonucci has decided to retire from professional football after Fenerbahce's final game of the season.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The veteran defender has officially announced that he has decided to bring the curtain down on his illustrious career as he is set to appear for one last time in Fenerbahce's final game of the season on Sunday against Istanbulspor.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
The former Juventus star terminated his contract with the Bianconeri last summer and joined Union Berlin on a one-year deal. However, his journey in Germany lasted for only six months as he moved to the Turkish Super Lig and signed for Fenerbahce during the January transfer window.
Bonucci hoped to be picked in Italy's squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 but after Luciano Spalletti ignored him in the preliminary squad, the legendary player decided to hang up his boots.
WHAT LEONARDO BONUCCI SAID
Speaking to Fenerbahce's official website, the 37-year-old said, "It was a pleasure for me to be a part of this wonderful family. I tried to show my best on and off the field, but most importantly, we will fight our last battle. I want to finish my career with a cup and we have a chance to become champions. I thank everyone."
WHAT NEXT?
The Yellow Canaries will aim to win their final game of the season and then hope that Galatasaray lose their clash against Konyaspor to bag the Super Lig title for the 20th time.
