The club were keen on appointing former Ajax boss Maurice Steijn before turning their attentions to Van Persie, according to Dutch Outlet AD.

Van Persie had been working as the coach of Feyenoord's U18s team, where he is a club legend.

His agent reportedly called Heerenveen to inform them that the former forward would be interested in taking the vacant managerial hot-seat should it be offered to him.

It comes after the club announced they would part ways with manager Kees van Wonderen at the end of the season last month.

Van Persie reportedly made a good impression after his first interview and is set to be announced soon.

His current club Feyenoord are understood to be unhappy with Van Persie's decision as they hoped he would soon make the step up for them from the U18s to the U21s.

But the forward has shown his ambition with wanting to take over a first-team that currently sit 10th in the Eredivisie.

The former forward has almost qualified for his UEFA coaching license which would grant him the ability to manage in the Dutch league.

He is set to hold a final meeting with Heerenveen sporting director Ferry de Haan over his budget and whether he will be able to bring his own coaching staff.

He played with De Haan at Feyenoord when the club won the UEFA Cup in 2002.

Van Persie is most well known for his spells at Arsenal and Manchester United in the Premier League, where he scored 144 goals in 280 appearances.

He won consecutive golden boots in the 2011-12 season and the 2012-13 seasons and one won league title with Manchester United after completing a controversial move from the Gunners.
