Former Arsenal and Real Madrid playmaker Mesut Ozil, who retired last year, has swapped the football pitch for the gym with incredible results

Mesut Ozil has left fans stunned after showcasing his incredible body transformation.

The German playmaker was known for his slender frame during his spells with Arsenal and Real Madrid, but he looks like a different man now. Since announcing his retirement from playing last year, after ending his career in Turkey with Istanbul Basaksehir, Ozil has hit the weights – and the results are there for all to see.

The 35-year-old has shared a video of himself on Instagram lifting huge weights in the gym with what looks to be a weight vest. Some fans joked he looks like a bulked-up army recruit, with a huge increase in muscle in his upper body and arms.

“Mesut Ozil is working towards a beach-ready physique,” joked one. Another asked: “What is Mesut Ozil up to? No off days.”

A third declared: “The Mesut Ozil gym era is already heating up.” A fourth quipped: “Looks like Mesut Ozil is trying to join the Turkish army.” A fifth joked: “Ozil got his motivation from the tank.”

A shocked Gunners fan added: “I swear Mesut Ozil is even bigger than he was last week. Beast mode ON.”

Alongside another video of him training with battle ropes, he posted: “Always stay ready, then you don't need to get ready.”

Among the football stars impressed by Ozil’s body transformation is fellow former Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, who posted “Bro not bad” followed by a wink emoji while giving a public thumbs up.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand wrote “Looking strong bro” while ex-Chelsea man Antonio Rudiger branded Ozil a “Beast”.

Having been blighted by injury, Ozil announced his retirement just over a year ago at the age of 34. He announced at the time: “I’ve had the privilege to be a professional football player for almost 17 years now and I feel incredibly thankful for the opportunity. But in recent weeks and months, having also suffered some injuries, it’s become more and more clear that it’s time to leave the big stage of football.

“It has been an amazing journey filled with unforgettable moments and emotions. I want to thank my clubs – Schalke, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Fenerbahce, Basaksehir and the coaches who supported me, plus team-mates who have become friends.

“Special thanks must go to my family members and my closest friends. They have been a part of my journey from day one and have given me so much love and support, through the good times and the bad.”
