WHAT HAPPENED?
As Liverpool intensifies its search for Klopp's successor, the club has identified Ruben Amorim and Julian Nagelsmann as potential alternatives should Alonso decline the managerial role, according to The Telegraph. Amorim, 39, has emerged as a compelling option thanks to his success in revitalising Sporting CP's title ambitions after winning it in 2021. However, he has a contract with Sporting until 2026 and Liverpool might have to shell out a hefty compensation fee to bring him on board.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Meanwhile, Nagelsmann, 36, is another intriguing prospect and since his contract with the German Football Association (DFB) ends after the upcoming European Championship, he is a relatively easier option to pursue. Despite leaving Bayern on a sour note, Nagelsmann's coaching acumen remains highly regarded at Liverpool. Moreover, his profile aligns with the club's ethos of identifying potential managerial candidates relative to squad performance and spending - the same blueprint that they allegedly followed while signing Klopp back in 2015.
DID YOU KNOW?
Nagelsmann has also been reportedly made a "priority target" to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United by Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Should the Dutchman be axed at the end of the campaign, Nagelsmann remains the frontrunner to succeed him at Old Trafford.
WHAT NEXT?
Alonso's contract with Leverkusen runs until 2026 and his alleged affinity towards Bayern Munich may force Liverpool to explore alternative options. Amidst the managerial transition, Liverpool are also in the process of appointing a new sporting director, with Will Spearman currently serving as the director of research. Needless to say, it would be a busy time at the Anfield offices in the lead-up to the summer as they prepare to usher in the post-Klopp era at the club.
