Xabi Alonso is looking to snub Liverpool in favour of a move to former club

Xabi Alonso, the head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, is reportedly being pursued by a major European team, and Liverpool may lose out on him.

Since taking over at Bayer Leverkusen in October 2022, Alonso has done an incredible job, establishing himself as one of the finest young managers in Europe.

At the time of his takeover, the German team was facing relegation, but he quickly turned them around. They are presently strong candidates to win the Bundesliga.

With their 3-0 victory over current champions Bayern Munich on Saturday night, Bayer Leverkusen, who are yet to lose this season, increased their lead in the standings to five points.

Carlo Ancelotti's contract extension was reportedly surprising for Real Madrid due to Alonso's rise, according to Spanish publication Nacional, but Florentino Perez has not forgotten about the Leverkusen manager.

According to reports, the manager has asked Leverkusen to listen and negotiate with Real Madrid should he exit before the end of his contract in 2026, and Perez has "already called" Alonso to tie his signing for the future.

"It seems clear that Alonso will return" to Real Madrid, the report concludes.

For Liverpool supporters, there is some good news: since this is Nacional, it is reasonable to believe that they have jumped the gun on this one.

However, Liverpool will anticipate competition for Alonso, as Bayern Munich may also be interested in him if they decide to break company with Thomas Tuchel.
