Bayern Munich have reportedly reached a verbal agreement to sign Kieran Trippier from Newcastle. The German giants emerged as shock contenders to sign the 33-year-old this week, with the North-East club prepared to sell in order to help comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

Now according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, the two clubs have settled on a deal. And Trippier, who would link-up with former Tottenham teammates Harry Kane and Eric Dier, is seemingly prepared to head to the Bundesliga.

"Verbal agreement between FC Bayern and Trippier has been reached now!" he wrote on social media. "The 33-year-old keen to join Bayern immediately. Bayern and Newcastle in contact."

Trippier, who arrived from Atletico Madrid in January 2022 in a £12million deal, has been one of the club's most consistent performers under Eddie Howe. Any permanent sale is likely to be sanctioned reluctantly, but Howe is currently in a situation where he is unable to strengthen his squad without raising additional funds.

Last month, the manager publicly backed his player after he missed a penalty in the League Cup quarter-final shootout against Chelsea, which followed his late error that allowed the Blues to equalise. "As I've said many times he's a transformative signing," said Howe. "Someone that's taken the group onto a totally different level.

"He's been the heartbeat of that. So when he's given us so much now it's our turn to support him and look after him the other way and that's what we'll do."

Only 12 months ago, the former England international signed a one-year extension to his current deal. That now runs until the summer of 2025, meaning Newcastle are in a position to demand a fee for their key man.

Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel has also been hunting January reinforcements with the future of his two of his key defenders still the subject of speculation. Centre-back Matthijs de Ligt has been linked with a big money move to the Premier League after losing his place in the regular XI following a knee injury.

And in a development that would appear significant in their pursuit of Trippier, full-back Alphonso Davies has been touted for a move to Real Madrid. Chelsea have also been reportedly linked with the Canadian international.
