Kevin De Bruyne met wife when 'pretty girl' favourited tweet and friend 'slid in DMs'

It's usually Kevin De Bruyne who's providing the assists, but when it came to meeting his future wife, his friend turned provider after she'd made the first move

Kevin De Bruyne has opened up on the "embarrassing" story of how he met his wife on Twitter.

The Manchester City star's love life has often been in the headlines, mostly when ex-girlfriend Caroline Lijnen admitted to cheating on him with his Belgium team-mate Thibaut Courtois. But after splitting from her in 2013, he met the love of his life Michele Lacroix.

They've since married and have three children together - sons Mason and Rome and daughter Suri. De Bruyne explained how it all began in his first-person piece for The Players' Tribune.

"It started with a tweet," he began. "I only had a few thousand followers at the time, because I was still on loan at Werder Bremen. So I tweeted something about a match or whatever, and this pretty girl favourited it.

"I was single at the time, and my friend noticed it. So he said, 'She looks like a nice girl, no? You should send her a message'."

The naturally shy De Bruyne tried to avoid that, responding: "No, no, no. Come on. People don't like me. They don't get me. She won't respond."

But his friend was having none of it. "So he grabbed my phone and started tapping out a message," De Bruyne continued. "He showed me the phone and said, 'Come on, can I hit send?'

"I was probably on the floor, cringing, but for some reason I said 'OK fine, send it'. Says it all, no? I'm supposed to be this big footballer, and I didn't even have the heart to slide into my future wife's DMs. I didn't dare!"

The message was sent and the rest, as they say, is history. "She changed my life in so many ways - honestly, I don't know what I would do without her," concluded a wholesome De Bruyne.
