Erik ten Hag has ruled out a January move for Scott McTominay.

Manchester United midfielder McTominay has become too important for Reds boss ten Hag to lose - even though the club tried to sell him in the summer. West Ham were close to clinching a £50 million deal for McTominay, who also attracted interest from Newcastle.

But the Scotland star has impressed his club boss in training and also through his commitment to United. And he rescued United last weekend against Brentford as a late substitute, scoring two added-time goals to turn what would have been a hugely-damaging defeat into an unlikely victory.

McTominay also appeared to have demonstrated his goal touch again for his country against Spain last Thursday, only to have a spectacular free kick controversially disallowed. Ten Hag, meanwhile, also feels he can’t afford to lose another body from what has been an injury-hit squad this season.

McTominay, 26, is under contract at Old Trafford until the summer of 2025, with the club also having an option to extend that deal by a further year. And in the meantime, his immediate future remains very much at United. The Scotsman has been at the club since he was six years old and his made his first-team debut in 2017 and has gone to make 215 appearances for the club, scoring 21 goals in the process.

His late double against Brentford already surpassed his goal tally in the league in his last two campaigns, having scored just a single goal.

While he's in his eighth season at Man United, McTominay has only had his hands on one piece of silverware in his career, that being the EFL Cup he won last season. He's unfortunately been more accustomed to losing in finals having been the runner-up in two FA Cup finals and one Europa League final in his career.
