Real Betis could be set to hand former Manchester United shot-stopper David De Gea a contract - with the Spanish side desperate to solve their keeping crisis ahead of Thursday

David De Gea could be set to join a new club, two months after he left Manchester United.

De Gea is still a free agent, and, as a result, he can agree terms with clubs despite the transfer window already slamming shut. And Real Betis might exercise that option ahead of their Europa League campaign.

Manuel Pellegrini's side are ready to slam the "panic button", according to Spanish outlet Fichajes, and sign De Gea with Betis' goalkeeping options looking thin on the ground.

Betis' current first-team keeper is ex-Manchester City flop Claudio Bravo, but he missed the weekend's action against Barcelona through injury. While his backup, Rui Silva, limped off at half-time due to a groin strain.

Third-choice Fran Vieites finished the game, but Spanish media is reporting Betis "can't afford" to wait until January - and they want to add De Gea to the squad before their clash with Rangers on Thursday.

United replaced De Gea with Andre Onana - who has endured his own difficulties while playing for the Red Devils.

After leaving, De Gea penned an emotional message to United fans: "I just wanted to send this farewell message to all Manchester United supporters. I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love for the last 12 years...

"It’s been an unforgettable and successful period since I came here. I didn’t think from leaving Madrid as a young boy we would achieve what we did together.

"Now, it’s the right time to undertake a new challenge, to push myself again in new surroundings. Manchester will always be in my heart, Manchester has shaped me and will never leave me. We’ve seen it all."
