Chelsea have been urged to sign Evan Ferguson
Ex-Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has urged his former club to make a move to hijack Manchester City's potential deal to sign Brighton star Evan Ferguson in the coming transfer windows. The Ireland international has continued to impress in the Premier League at just 18-years-old.
At six foot and two inches tall, the youngster has shown his ability to rough and tumble with the best defenders in the league on a regular basis. Add to that his knack of finding the back of the net often and Ferguson is shaping up to be a star for years to come in football.
That has naturally brought about plenty of suitors, with clubs from across the division looking to land the next big thing for their own team. With Brighton well known for their ability to sell, recent reports have stated the striker will be valued at over the £120million mark.
Manchester City have been one of those sides heavily linked with the idea of partnering Ferguson with star striker Erling Haaland. The Norway international has already proven to be a problem for opposition teams, scoring 36 goals in 35 Premier League appearances last season.
Adding another goal scorer, with the potential to get even better could become a scary prospect for those teams who may have an added reason to add Ferguson to their ranks. With that in mind, former England defender Glen Johnson has called upon his previous teams Chelsea and Liverpool to make their move.
He told GGRecon: "They should at least try, for sure. He's [Ferguson] a young kid that's burst on the scene and is scoring goals in the Premier League, which is obviously a very tough thing to do. Evan will have a better chance at getting into either Chelsea or Liverpool's team than he would Manchester City's if he decided to make the move there.
"I believe Chelsea and Liverpool will have their eyes on Evan already because young goalscorers in the Premier League don't come around that often, so you can completely understand why the big guns will have their eyes on him.”
The goal scoring issue has been something that has plagued Mauricio Pochettino in his early tenure of his Chelsea career, while it is one that has dragged long before his arrival. With the addition of Ferguson, those issues could be solved, but likely at a huge price tag.
