Mason Greenwood could be thrown a lifeline by Steven Gerrard following Manchester United's recent announcement.

Mason Greenwood could be thrown a lifeline by Steven Gerrard as clubs circle in hope of landing Manchester United’s recent exile. It has been announced that the forward has mutually agreed to leave Old Trafford this summer, with loan and permanent exits both set to be considered.

On Monday, the Red Devils released a statement to explain that they had concluded their six-month internal investigation and ruled that Greenwood would not be reintegrated into Erik ten Hag’s first team.

The England international has not featured for United since he was arrested in January 2022 and charged with attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour, despite the Crown Prosecution Services dropping all charges in February.

After conducting their own investigation, United revealed that all parties had concluded that it is best for Greenwood to leave his boyhood club this summer and an exit would be facilitated. According to The Sun, numerous clubs have wasted no time in registering an interest in the 21-year-old and are hopeful of striking a deal to secure his services.

Several Saudi Pro League sides are among those likely to table an offer, with Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq particularly keen on signing Greenwood. The Middle Eastern outfit are said to be weighing up whether to use their significant budgets to lure the forward away from Europe, with a £10million-a-year contract being considered.

Al-Ettifaq have offered significant deals to numerous stars in the hope of bolstering their ranks with top-quality players that are proven at the top level, with ex-Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson said to be earning himself £700,000 per week at the club.

Greenwood is not expected to be short of offers from within Europe too though, with Jose Mourinho’s Roma monitoring his situation closely. Other Serie A outfits are also said to be keen, as well as Turkish side Galatasaray – who have made use of there being several stars available this summer for minimal fees, such as Wilfried Zaha and Hakim Ziyech.

With the transfer window set to conclude on September 1, it remains to be seen whether any Premier League clubs emerge as contenders to sign Greenwood or they opt to target alternative options. If the United academy product decides that he would be keen to head to the Middle East to attempt to get his career back on track then there is not a significant rush for the Red Devils to strike a deal with a club as the transfer window in Saudi Arabia closes on September 20.
