A Premier League loanee delayed his medical tests in order to watch the latest episode of ITV's Love Island - to leave the club doctor baffled

Newcastle defender asked to Kell Watts asked to delay his medical before a transfer - because Love Island was on.

The 23-year-old has returned for a second loan spell at Wigan from his parent club but couldn't get the deal over the line until he had finished watching an episode of ITV2's dating game show.

Club doctor Jonathan Tobin revealed all on social media after the loan was officially confirmed, he said: "The only pre-signing medical I’ve ever done that had to be delayed because the signee insisted on watching Love Island.

"Not even joking. Tics, I give you Kell Watts. Some fella."

Watts is back at the DW Stadium two years after his first spell, having also spent time with Stevenage, Mansfield Town, Plymouth Argyle and Peterborough United during his time at St James' Park.

The former England youth international signed for their academy at the age of just eight when his family moved from Alnwick, Northumberland.

A full 15 years later and Watts has made just once appearance for the first-team back in 2019/20 during a 3-1 defeat against Liverpool at St James'.

Watts said of his return to the club: "When it first came about, it was something that I was really looking forward to doing.

"The last time I was here, it felt like home, so it’s nice to be back home!

"Last time I was here, I created memories that will last my whole career, and I’m wanting to make more memories in a Wigan shirt now."

Watts will be playing his football in League One following Wigan's relegation from the Championship, under new boss Shaun Maloney.

The Scot played 91 times for the club between 2011 and 2015, and returns as boss following six wins from 19 games at Hibernian.

First up for the Latics is the visit of Derby, but not before their EFL Cup first round contest against Ryan Reynolds' Wrexham.
