The ex-Crystal Palace player, 25, is out of contract next summer but United have the chance to keep him beyond that.
English defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka is tipped to stay at Old Trafford past 2024
Palace would like Wan-Bissaka to return to Selhurst Park but they will not have any joy because United plan to keep the defender, who has impressed manager Erik ten Hag.
The Dutchman wants to sign Axel Disasi, 25, for the position but the fee is too big and takeover issues make it difficult.
Monaco may yet sell Disasi so Ten Hag is on alert — especially if Diogo Dalot leaves Old Trafford.
But Arsenal and Chelsea could be ready to nip in with a bid.
It's thought that Monaco rate the four-cap Frenchman at around £34million.
He played all 38 of their Ligue 1 games last term.
The Gunners' need for rearguard reinforcements has been eased by Jurrien Timber's arrival from Ajax.
But new Chelsea chief Mauricio Pochettino wants to strengthen his squad all round.
And the Blues let centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly join Saudi side Al-Hilal.
United, meanwhile, appear mainly focused on bringing in a new world-class striker.
But they might have to cough up close to £86m for Atalanta's Rasmus Hojlund.
