Manchester United star Antony has broken his silence after being accused of domestic violence by his ex-girlfriend.

Earlier this month it was reported that Gabriela Cavallin had filed a police report in Antony's home state of Sao Paulo accusing the player - with whom she has had a relationship over the past year - of 'domestic violence, threat and bodily injury'.

The document was said to also include 'photos of abrasions and threatening messages' from the former Ajax forward, said Globo Esporte. The report also said Cavallin, 22, had alleged Antony assaulted her on May 20, the same day he was part of the United team that beat Bournemouth 1-0 in the Premier League.

Antony has now taken to social media claiming he has been "falsely accused of assault" and vowed to prove his innocence.

Posting on Instagram, in a message which has been translated into English, he wrote: "To friends, fans and followers. For you, after having given my testimony at the police station where the investigation of the investigation involving my name is being conducted, I wanted to speak publicly, for the first time, since I was falsely accused of assault.

"I was silent so far so that nothing could interfere with the investigative process, but during all these days my family and I suffered in silence.

"Even though I was born and raised in a very needy community, I had never gone through a situation similar to this, in which a false accusation of aggression generated a previous and unfair public judgement on the part of some.

Antony has responded to allegations of assault by his ex-girlfriend

"After the closure of the investigation, my innocence will be proven, being certain that justice will prevail and the damage initially caused to my image will remain in the past. Thank you for the countless messages of support received at this very difficult time."

Antony and Batista share a young son, and it appears she is still living in England. United invested heavily in Antony to help provide attacking cover after Mason Greenwood's enforced absence.

England striker Greenwood was charged with the attempted rape of a female, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault in 2022. Those charges were dropped earlier this year.

An internal investigation by United regarding Greenwood is still ongoing but the forward has started training on his own as he looks to get ready for the new season, whomever that may be with.
